The 7th annual Champions for Children Gala was held on Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The gala’s theme, Creating a World of Difference: Many Cultures—No Boundaries, speaks to the strength of Montgomery County with its progressive business climate and array of unique and culturally diverse communities. The Gala airs in its entirety on Montgomery County cable channel 34 and was hosted by WJLA TV news anchor Leon Harris.
Ten awardees were honored at the event and receieved recognition by over 250 attendees including Superintendent Dr. Jerry Weast, County Executive Ike Leggett, and several other distinguished guests.
The 2009 Top 10 Champions for Children are:
- Marian Greenblatt Fund Winner / MCPS Teacher of the Year Finalist: Jennifer Goodstein, Thomas W. Pyle Middle School
- Marian Greenblatt Fund Winner / MCPS Teacher of the Year Finalist: Autumn Moore, Ridgeview Middle School
- Rookie Teacher of the Year: Jaclyn Klueger, Sequoyah Elementary School
- Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Education Administration and Supervision: Sandy Sengstack, Certification Coordinator, Office of Human Resources
- Supporting Services Employee of the Year: Feri Jahanmir, Ridgeview Middle School
- Business Champion for Children: Northrop Grumman Information Systems
- Volunteer Champion for Children: Arcola Elementary School Parent Teacher Association
- Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award: Cheryl Pulliam, Oakland Terrace Elementary School
- Washington Post Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award: Diane Kolata, Chevy Chase Elementary School
